Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Interlibrary Loans/Document Delivery

1. What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan is a service to obtain research materials not available at UNM Health Sciences Library by requesting them from other libraries. These resources include, but are not limited to journal articles and books.

2. What is Document Delivery?

Document Delivery is a service to deliver an electronic copy of resources owned at UNM Health Sciences Library.

3. Who may use Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery services at HSLIC?

UNM Health Sciences faculty, staff and students. Also NM health care providers, government agencies, unaffiliated businesses and members of the public who qualify for Non-Student Accounts Receivable (obtained by ILL staff from HSC Fiscal Services).

Non-HSC faculty, staff and students at UNM must request materials through the UNM University Libraries Interlibrary Loan Department.

Students enrolled in other academic institutions should contact their home institution library.

Patrons with Non-Student Accounts Receivable (see above) may request copies of journal articles (ONLY from HSLIC's own collections) but not books.

5. How do I pay (if I'm a non-HSC patron)?

Payment method is:

6. Do UNM Health Sciences Center students get free Interlibrary Loan service?

Yes, Interlibrary loan fees have been waived for HSC students since July 2006.

Also, free Document Delivery service is available to HSC students, faculty, staff and affiliates

7. How do I place a request?

Please visit our logon page to register as an ILLiad customer and to enter your requests. If you do not have a UNM Net ID to log in with, please call the Interlibary Loan Office at 505-272-2311 to get an account created. Once the account is created, you will be able to log in to create requests.

8. What if I forget my password?

If you are using your UNM Net ID and password, your password will need to be reset. Click the "Forgot Password" link on the home screen and ok to the message box that appears. This will take your to the UNM reset password webpage. If you are not using a UNM Net ID, call the Interlibrary Loan Office (272-2311) or send an email to hsc-docdel@salud.unm.edu. Give us your username and we will give you a temporary password to log on to ILLiad and then you may select a password of your own choosing.

9. How long will it take to get my materials?

Journal articles average 2-3 working days.

Books average 2 weeks

We do not guarantee that you will receive your requested items within these times. While we attempt to send requests to libraries with good lending turnaround times, ultimately the lending library determines the speed with which the request will be filled.

10. Does HSLIC's ILL Dept. do RUSH requests?

HSLIC's Interlibrary loan department does not do RUSH requests at this time.

11. How do I receive my requested materials?

A PDF file of the requested article is delivered to the patron's ILL inbox and a notification is also sent to the patron's e-mail address.

Patrons must pick up borrowed books at the Library Service Point Desk upon being notified of the book's arrival at the Health Sciences Library.

12. What is electronic delivery?

Electronic delivery allows you to receive a PDF file of the journal article you requested.  When you receive an email notice that a requested article is ready to picked up, you log onto your ILLiad account, and click on “View/PDF Articles”. The article opens on your desktop.

13. How do I sign up for electronic delivery?

New ILLiad users choose “Yes, PDF file via Internet” as your preferred article delivery method at registration.

Current ILLiad users can call or email the Interlibrary Loan Office (272-2311 or hsc-docdel@salud.unm.edu) and request a change to e-delivery.

For unaffiliated users to set up payment for electronic delivery, please call the ILL Office (272-2311) with your billing information (mailing address).

14. Copyright restrictions

The copyright law of the United States governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Photocopies or other reproductions can be furnished only under certain conditions, for use in private study, scholarship, or research. Use of reproductions for other purposes may make the user liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the request would involve violation of the copyright law. Interlibrary Loan Services is a member of the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC).

15. Hours of Service

Staff are available to answer questions whenever the library is open; ILL staff are available 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
